Sony Cyber-shot TX-200V – Best of point and shoot marketplace

The new Sony Cyber-shot TX200V’s photo and movie capabilities will make any smartphone camera look like a toy.

So what makes the TX-200V so damn special? Well, first off it rocks a massive 18 megapixel sensor, the biggest to date in the point and shoot marketplace. To complement the TX-200V’s extra larger picture taking abilities, Sony has outfitted the rear of the camera with an Xtra Fine TruBlack OLED wide touch-screen measuring 3.3-inches. Furthermore, it can swim to a depth of up to 5m, is dust proof, freeze proof up to 14 F degrees and when faced with a tumble down the stairs, can probably survive despite being covered in some sort of all glass facade.

Among its many shooting options is the capability to capture movies in AVCHD format at 1080p at 60 frames per second and nine picture effects like miniature and toy camera filters. Sony’s also claiming that it has an improved autofocus system that’ll focus in approximately 0.13 seconds in bright conditions and 0.25 seconds in low-light situations, which if true, is more than twice as fast as the fastest point-and-shoots I’ve tested. Also, Sony’s developed a new extra-high-sensitivity technology that minimizes unwanted noise in low-light shooting conditions.

Ruggedness aside, the Sony Cyber-shot TX200V camera has an iPhone-esque physical design. The glass-fronted TX200V’s design might even be a visual riff on the fact that theApple iPhone 4S’s popular 8-megapixel camera is a module made by Sony.
If you like your cameras to look more like cameras, Sony also announced the WX70 and WX50. Both are 16-megapixel cameras with Exmor R backside-illuminated CMOS sensors, 5x f2.6-6.3 25-125mm lenses, and full HD movie capture at 60i in AVCHD format. They have a ton of shooting options, just like their predecessor, the WX9, but get some new things, too, like the enhanced low-light shooting capabilities and creative picture effects that can be found in the TX200V.

The product ships out in the last week of March and is currently priced at $500. Preordering of the same has started.
