With the costs of pendrives dropping, the usage of CD’s and DVD’s is becoming kind of outdated. Recently, there was an article on the development of a 1 TB pendrive which will be available with the Swiss army knife (Price yet to be announced). Most of the R&D is now towards the development of pendrives. A 8 GB pendrive is available for as low as Rs. 380. Pendrives have become an indispensable gadget in this era.
The “Universal USB Installer” is one such software which helps you to install any operating system using your USB pendrive. It is a free standalone application that runs on Windows systems. The GUI is rather very simple. A long list of operating systems are specified in the software. A long list of distros are available which includes Ubuntu, Redhat, SuSe to name a few, as well as some specialized distros for system management, security and rescue. Not to disappoint the windows users, windows vistas and windows 7 are also among these distros. The tool is updated periodically to include recent distro releases as well. You would obviously need the .iso file of the distro you want to install. (Distros are nothing but distributions, which is the Linux/ Unix user’s term of operating system in the family of “Unix-like” operating systems. There are nearly more than 600 Linux distributions and over 300 are in active development.)

The tool creates a bootable pendrive and the operating system can be installed from the same. However, you would need to change your boot order during the startup so that the pendrive is read during booting. Once booting starts from the pendrive, the same procedure for installing any OS is to be followed.
Some advantages of using a pendrive to install any operating system are as follows. Installation finishes very fast as the data transfer rate of the usb is faster in comparison to DVD’s and CD’s. One more advantage is that you can reuse the pendrive to install any other operating system too (unlike CD’s and DVD’s, unless its a rewritable one).
The open source latest version of the software can be downloaded here
